The cost of keeping quiet

The cost of keeping quiet

When I first started talking about my periods, I was asking my friends questions because I actually had no benchmark to work from to know if mine were indeed ‘up the spout’ or they were alright. Apart from the general bemoaning about being on our periods, or due on I found that other than that I hadn’t talked to my friends much at all and the faces they were pulling at me asking what sanitary protection they used or how often they changed it I could tell that they also weren’t that comfortable with the convo either. Some even said so “jeez Gem what the hell do you want to know all this for anyway?” Since I have taken a more not giving a flying fuck about talking about periods vag steams yoni eggs and what your labia looks like, it has come to my glaring attention that we have absolutely no

Vaginal Steams – What the Actual Fuck?!

Vaginal Steams – What the Actual Fuck?!

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t think this the very first time someone spoke to me about vaginal steaming, I’d never heard of it before and it conjured up lots of images in my head about how that could look! I enjoy getting the same raised eyebrows from family, friends, and clients when I tell them about it also, because I know they are thinking that exact same thought followed by what the hell is Gem on about now and where are the cameras?! So before you, negative nellies get your thumbs geared up to tell me how much utter nonsense this all is, have a read and then make your own mind with the full info because if you have never tried it you are in for a bit of a treat. Now because I suggest this, people can assume that I’m some kind of crackpot

Angry Birds

Angry Birds

I’ve been following the story about Serena Williams’s ‘rage’ in the final of the US Open  with interest, I have no idea about the ins and outs of tennis but what I do know is that fellas can be cursing, swearing and throwing their rackets about the place and considered “outspoken” or “challenging” if a woman does it then she is seen as “emotional”, “irrational” or “hysterical”. I’m sick to death of women being billed as emotional or sensitive, and I tell you what it really touches a nerve when it’s suggested it could be to do with our cycle. Yes, we do get ahem less patient but only because our body is trying in vain to communicate with us! If you want to go around tearing heads off every month I suggest you have a look at what you are suppressing for the rest of the month, it will be for

The Well Woman Project

The Well Woman Project

Hi I’m Gem, I own The Well Woman Project, I’m writing this blog to hopefully shed some light on a plight that the whole population 50% actually have the physical condition and 50% have to watch a loved one go though it. What am I talking about? Endometriosis a real bitch of a chronic health condition that effects 1 in 4 women – that’s about 200 million women world wide THAT WE KNOW OF. I highlight that because it takes on average 8 years to get a diagnosis because we have some warped idea that periods are meant to be hell on earth every month. So the number of women with this condition is bound to be much higher. Women who have it have more oestrogen than their body can cope with, this comes from our food, our environment, our household and personal products and stress/lifestyle factors. Sanitary products being

St John’s Wort

St John’s Wort

St John’s wort (Hypericum perforated) isn’t usually associated with menstrual health, but it does give us a few amazing properties. It’s coming to the end of it’s flowering now but this morning I happened upon a massive amount of it which filled me with great joy. Its really careful to not get it confused with Rag wort (Jacobaea vulgaris) which is poisonous but also abundant around this time and they usually grow close by to each other. It’s funny how a plant can allude you for some time and then all of a sudden you see it every where! I have been looking out for it for ages and almost given up and then there is was all over the place. It likes scrubby dry areas best to grow, as with all plants if you do collect always be respectful and don’t strip the plant completely. Also ask permission and say thank

What have you got to gain?

What have you got to gain?

I have been guilty of this myself, seeing the negatives in something – actually the negative I was seeing was that women with menstrual problems are tough cookies to crack. Especially if they have Endo or PCOS or any other numerous condition associated with our periods and cycle. I’ll be brutally honest and say that I find the groups I belonged to really bloody awful, I had to put my suit of armour on to pop, and I would find myself yelling at my phone as I read another sorry tale of despair and heartache over some poor women being given ridiculous advice or not being believed about her condition. Go and have a baby, it’s all part of being a woman, periods are meant to be this way (my particular favourite on the old bollocks rating. So I stopped going in then, feeling a complete sense of failure at

Pink Period Pain Killers

Pink Period Pain Killers

Pink Period Pain Killers There is so much wrong with this I’m not quite sure where to begin. I like pink but must everything created with women in mind have to be pink? I mean really did anyone in the marketing team even think about it for a nano second? It pisses me off; all it does is make us pay 10 times the price because it’s fucking pink. Australia has banned pharmaceutical companies for targeting specific pains with their painkillers, I can see why. A packet of Neurofen period capsules will set you back £3.79 for 14 and a home brand will cost you 35p for 16. Which means one of the pills from Neurofen will cost just 8p less then the whole box of home brand and its EXACTLY the same drug in it! So they are a complete rip off. Dysmenorrhea which is the medical term for

Are your periods costing you your LIFE?

Are your periods costing you your LIFE?

“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.” ― Lao Tzu What is being in chronic pain during your cycle like for you day in day out? Pretty exhausting I would imagine, I bet that it kinda rules your life. I suspect it’s dictating to you when you can go out, eat, sleep, exercise, work, holiday, look after your family, have sex and having a social life can be really hard. It completely governs your thoughts, and your life. “Will I be ok today?” “What if I get my period while I’m away?” “I’m a terrible friend/lover/partner because I have had to bail on something AGAIN. Life is so shit because I am always in so much pain and that makes me really frustrated and depressed, it’s so unfair why do I have to be like this?”

Periods aren’t meant to hurt!

Periods aren’t meant to hurt!

Period myth no.284. An absolute corker this one. I’m generally met with raised eyebrows and a yeah right when I say this. I believe it’s one of the biggest problems we have in understanding about our cycles, because everyone believes this. So when you pitch up to ask for help you generally get told that it is very normal to have pain. It isn’t. How you explain pain is very difficult too, because it’s totally believed periods are meant to be awful, when we explain how awful it is we are told it is very normal. It might be met with looks of disbelief that really we should just crack on with it because everyone woman suffers each month, everyone knows that. So the cycle of pain and being told it’s normal starts. We think we are going mad, surely not everyone has this much pain during their period?! Our

Are you are responsible for your body?

Are you are responsible for your body?

Responsibility it literally means to respond with ability. Are you responding to your body’s needs with ability at the moment? Do you even know what those needs are? Have you ever stopped to ask yourself what it is that you need right now? I’m not talking about more sleep, a wee or hot bubble bath I’m talking about actual symptoms that are present in your body at this given moment. Have you checked in with those recently? Painful sex, having to get up in the middle of the night to change sanitary wear, crippling cramps, nausea, headaches, irritable mood, bleeding every 2 weeks, anaemic, no energy, depression, anxiety, passing large clots, feeling faint and dizzy, cravings, emotional, bloating, tiredness, upset stomach, needing to take pain relief, sciatica, lower back ache, dragging feeling inside, wanting to rip your partners head off, night sweats, tummy ache, brain fog, acne, spots, heavy bleeding,

Stinging nettle – A Women’s Herb

What’s the deal with Nettles? They are fucking amazing that what! Urtica dioica or the common name Stinging nettle, is a perennial flowering plant that has been used medicinally for ages, it dates back to Ancient Greece. Today, stinging nettle can be found all over the world and grows best in nitrogen-rich soil, it has heart-shaped leaves, that sting like a bitch if you brush past them or worse fall in them! So why do you want to get involved with this herb? Well this list of nutrients might make you think about this beaut of a plant differently it is loaded with vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B5, calcium, iron, folate, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, selenium and zinc! Who needs multivits after that little lot?! It is a wonder herb for women because drinking just a couple of cups of this a day over the week before and during your

Why are we waiting?

Why are we waiting?

Waiting, it’s never a nice experience is it? I work with a lot of women who are waiting to get better, waiting to have a baby or waiting for a diagnosis. They feel they have been waiting their whole lives. Like it’s all been put on pause and then one day they want something and they have to wait some more. I truly feel that if we are to get ahead of these dis-eases that plague women so much now adays, then we had better become BBF with our own bodies and unique ways within them. We don’t need to wait to be told we have an issue, or our fertility is compromised. It’s all there for us to see as plain as the nose on our face if we take the time to look and understand. Our beautiful wonderful amazing bodies are dutifully giving us all the answers

Childfree or Childless – I’m neither actually

Childfree or Childless – I’m neither actually

Childless or childfree I don’t resonate with either of these labels. I know we can all get a bit pedantic about labels these days and this could be another roll your eyes moment about something else we aren’t meant to say, but hear me out. I’m not less or free of anything I just knew I didn’t want to have kids. I never use those terms because less feels like I am not complete and free feels like I’m not able to commit! It occurred to me the other day when I was talking about this and I actually couldn’t get either of those words out and simply said I don’t have kids! Now you might be thinking ok, what is the point of all of this, well the point is there is still a huge amount of stigma attached to a woman that chooses not to pop a baby

Do you know your needs?

Do you know your needs?

I think all of us know the need of hunger, anyone else get hangry? I know it can’t be just me. Mark and I went to Rome for the weekend a few years ago, standing by the Trevi Fountain taking in the sights, he was busy taking some photo’s and the growl in my tummy was getting louder. I go quiet – it’s the first sign – “You ok?” asked Mark “We have about 20mins before I lose my shit” was my reply. “Bugger ok let’s go get eats now then!” I’m vile when I get hungry or tired combine the two and it’s not pretty in the slightest. Meeting those needs though before they go into the red zone, that is something I know well about myself and ALWAYS CARRY SNACKS! So if we know about hunger, and we act upon it to make us feel better why is

Endometriosis – stop telling me how shit it is and lets take some action.

Endometriosis – stop telling me how shit it is and lets take some action.

Raising awareness of Endometriosis isn’t going to happen if we keep wanging on about how rubbish it is, because as it stands at the moment all we are doing is moaning about period pain. The world needs a shift in understanding periods before it will ever understand endometriosis. Saying about how much pain we are in and how heavy our bleeds are to name just 2 of the several hundred symptoms of endo, isn’t enough because we aren’t being heard. Women themselves believe periods should be horrific, they see no reason to question them so how are we going to raise awareness of a disease we don’t know much about when we don’t know much about our own bodies? Writing a blog about your endo experience pretty much reads the same to every women who has it. All endo rebels can resonate with the writer because she has felt the

It isn’t luck that got me here

It isn’t luck that got me here

Sometimes I think am I lucky? Am I a fluke to have Endometriosis, Adenomyosis and Fibroids and have symptom free periods? I read a quote the other day that said ‘it isn’t luck, it is preparation and opportunity’… and I thought fuck yes it is! I know there are women out there that read my blogs like the one I got published and think phuut its alright for her she’s just the lucky one. I’m not, I started listening, I started to tune into my body and see what it was that she needed and I started to change things until I found stuff that worked. It was quite a bit of trial and error I can tell you. When I had my diagnosis of Endo and Adeno and I thought, ah-ha here is my opportunity to put into practice all I have taught myself I turned down the hormones

The Well Woman Action Plan

The Well Woman Action Plan

“I’m so tired I can’t put one foot in front of the other.” “I wish everyone would just piss off and leave me alone.” “Why can’t you all see what I need?” “Oh my God my period is so heavy I hope I don’t leak on the seat, I can feel it leaving my body, I can’t concentrate I just need to get to the toilet NOW.” “It feels like someone has punched me in the stomach, I feel so sick and the cramps are so bad. How am I going to do today?” “I don’t know how much longer I can take this.” “I just live off of pain killers during my period.” “I actually hate you so much right now I want to leave this partnership” “You have no idea what I’m going though right now.” “I just need some chocolate, or some cake or something sweet so

PMS – A special report

PMS – A special report

Period Mother-fuckery Shitfit is well known term for the epidemic that blights most females across the globe. It is pandemic in our society, and women with this condition must be handled with care. They are quite frankly a ticking time bomb of huge proportions, and those that have been caught in a PMS attack have reported it to be savage, traumatising and quite unfair. It seems most victims are side blinded by an attack when asking, ‘has anyone seen my keys?’ or ‘has my PE kit been washed?’ Reports say it’s very difficult to predict when and if it may occur, but when it does you wish you hadn’t asked. Some tests have been carried out on the females affected. So far it seems some of the findings suggest not listening to your body, putting yourself last on the priority list and eating shit food and real areas of concern.

Top 3 Things to help with Endometriosis that the adverts don’t tell you.

Top 3 Things to help with Endometriosis that the adverts don’t tell you.

The recentish advert from a major tampon brand claiming power over your periods while zip lining or whizzing down a log flume has really pissed me off. Why am I getting my knickers in a bunch over this? It’s the message that it is sending that tips me over the edge. I started looking back through the adverts on youtube, and they ALL pretty much amount to the same. Use this tampon to plug up your fanny and you will be able to wear white, swim, jump about like a loony with you friends and forget all about being on your period. From what I can tell these were all written and directed by men, because I guess that’s how they view it. And this masculine message of dealing with our periods is churned out over, and over, and over again. Keeping the message strong that we just have

What the Feck is Mizan anyway?!

What the Feck is Mizan anyway?!

Mizan means “balance”, and a Mizan treatment is doing just that – bringing balance back to the body. It is really gentle, and works over your tummy and lower back, from just below the bottom of your rib cage to the top of your pubic bone, and from your mid back to your tail bone. I would describe it as gentle but profound, and very intrinsically woman-centred. Mizan is more than ‘just’ a massage, it is a wholistic therapy and consultation which looks at your lifestyle and how it is contributing to your health. Your first treatment with me, I will have sent you a form for you to fill out, it’s quite in-depth and covers your diet, lifestyle, family history, emotional well being, menstruation symptoms, pregnancies and birth, menopause and most importantly why you have decided to have this treatment. It can seem quite daunting filling out the form,
