Its called a PERIOD…a little louder for those at the back!

Its called a PERIOD…a little louder for those at the back!

I have just been reading an article about how women are covering up their periods with pseudonyms introducing Pat Penny Pam – all the P’s instead of saying period. Although strangely Mary is the most popular name! It got me thinking about why this might be so, OK I might not go around saying I’m menstruating – I might if I need to make a point and it can seem functional to say bleeding or period. It might seem a bit of a laugh to say you have Pam in your pants. The thing is it still makes me think that we are hiding a bit, like putting your reusable pad up your sleeve so no one sees the contraband in the office.  The thing is it just goes onto deepen the shame and tabooness about it but also confuses the hell out of everyone. Yes, it might seem a

Peri-meno what now?

Peri-meno what now?

I looked up the meaning for the peri-menopause and this is what the dictionary said ‘the period of a woman’s life shortly before the occurrence of the menopause’. Now I don’t know about you, but the vagueness of the peri-menopause is only rivaled by a politician trying to answer a direct question. No one seems to know or particularly care for that matter. You are in no woman’s land. To say it’s the period shortly before the occurrence of the menopause is really the biggest crock of bollocks. You can start the peri years in your late 30s and women stop bleeding somewhere in the region of 50ish so maybe 20 years is a relatively short time. *shucks – you folk out there with kids seem to say different though right?! Although my mum does like to look at me and say how only yesterday I was her chubby kneed

Why have I got hollow legs before my period?

Why have I got hollow legs before my period?

I know I”m due on because I walk around my kitchen a few days before my period opening doors hoping to find a roast dinner behind one of them. There is just no filling me up, it’s like I’ve never been fed before! Oestrogen does inhibit the appetite, while progesterone increases it so your hormones do play a part in all of this! Levels of cortisol, often dubbed the “stress hormone,” are usually slightly elevated during your period, which can cause you to become more sensitive to insulin. As a result, you burn though your sugar stores quicker than usual and thus begin to crave more sugar in order to bring your levels back to normal. At the same time, levels of serotonin — often referred to as a “happiness hormone” — drop right before your period which helps to explain many common symptoms of PMS, including the desire to

What’s it like when you come to see me?

What’s it like when you come to see me?

When you book an appointment to come and see me for some Mizan, it’s pretty freaking awesome I won’t lie. First off you have a very comprehensive form to fill out, it goes through everything, lifestyle, diet, exercise, spiritual stuff, emotions, past medical history and symptoms to name a few topics. I usually ask clients to fill this out ahead of their appointment so I can have a nosey through it and have a bit of a heads up before we start. Sometimes we split the consultation and I might do this bit online and see the client for the actual treatment. Reason being it takes a good three hours to do the first initial consultation, told ya freaking awesome! You have space to ask me questions and chat through any concerns and issues while we talk through the consultation form, it‘s by doing this more information occurs, and dots

It makes my blood boil…

It makes my blood boil…

The news about Alabama bringing in such strict abortion laws makes my heart ache. Pushing women further down the queue of choice over their own bodies. It makes my blood boil actually that dusty old white men are disgusting how women can use their uteruses, IN THIS DAY AND AGE! This isn’t about if you think abortion is for you or not – I don’t care what your views are on that, each to their own but as a woman you have to be able to see that you can’t be dictated to by the government and sent to prison for wanting something not to happen to you. Lets face it a pregnancy might well be happening that you had no say in so it’s a double slap in the face. The comments that are being thrown around the internet are just abhorrent, the pro lifers seem to be a

Stand Up Comedy – The Best Business & Life Advice I’ve ever had!

Stand Up Comedy – The Best Business & Life Advice I’ve ever had!

A cold Sunday morning back in January I headed off to the Comedy Store in London for my first lesson in stand up comedy, I had taken leave of my senses and signed up a few months before hand, I was beginning to reflect on why I had done that. I met my fellow student comrades a motley crew of 15 from all walks of life and little did I know then that I would be creating some amazing friendships with these people. Everyone was nervous, in the realisation that this shit had just got real people. Our teacher was Mike Gunn a professional comedian with over 20 years experience on the circuit, so he knew a thing or two. Mike is a very laid back person who put us at ease straight away with addressing our nerves. “Everyone has been told they are shit before, and everyone has been

Have you got a wonky womb?

Have you got a wonky womb?

Our uterus is quite small really and is tucked into the pelvis in suspended animation supported by bungee ropes. I could tell you all the fancy pants technical terms here but I can’t be arsed to look up how to spell them so I’m keeping it simple and talking about it in layman’s terms. Right, what this can mean is that your uterus can travel around, albeit not a lot but a little bit makes a big difference. When I’m doing Mizan abdominal massage on a client I can feel the uterus (from the outside!) and I can tell if she partying a bit to the left or right of the body or is more towards the front or back. There are several positions a womb can be in, as you can see from my excellent drawings! In any other position other than where she should be is like a kinked hose pipe,

Don’t trust her she’s one of those weird quacks

Back in the day and I’m talking like 60 years ago Doctors endorsed cigarettes, there were even advert campaigns for Winston cigarettes tasting great to the pregnant mother and also causing low birth weight – win win! In that time we have gone from it being thrust upon us to it being hidden away and grim pictures prevailing all packets. What has happened in that time is people have got sick, but we have also become educated about the dangers of smoking and what that does to our bodies. Now I’m not here as a no smoking banshee, Jesus back in the 90’s I most likely smoking about 4 packets a night what with all the smoking in nightclubs and bars!! Fag burns in your favourite pair of new look polyester trousers were no laughing matter! The thing is we look back on all this now with bafflement, I mean even smoking indoors

Period Power Pants

Period Power Pants

The amazing team at WUKA – Wake Up Kick Ass (totally awesome) gave me the opportunity to try out their period pants and I wanted to share my experience with you. For many women, the idea of reusable sanitary wear leaves them feeling a little green and underwhelmed by the whole situation.  My greatest achievement to date is converting my bestie Sonia over to reusable pads, I can’t even say the word blood to her without her going very pale and wobbly. She is now a total convert and like all the women I hear after they have made the change, can’t believe they didn’t do it sooner. So up until now, I had been using reusable sanitary pads, but I had heard a lot about the pants and wanted to give them a go so I could give my followers a personal account of how it went. The pants are

Are our sanitary products as safe as we think they are?

Are our sanitary products as safe as we think they are?

This is going to be one of the most important things you read today without question, even if you aren’t having periods anymore or have never had a period in your life you will know someone who does and they need to read this. On average we use in the region of 10,000 pads or tampons in our lifetime. Which is quite a lot when you think about it, and when you really think about it there are a lot of women and that number doesn’t take long to get into astronomical figures. Not only do the pads and tampons we buy at the supermarket take about a billion years to break down after we have thrown them away they don’t really do a huge amount for us when we are using them, but most of us have absolutely no idea about that at all – because the manufacturers aren’t obliged to tell

The cost of keeping quiet

The cost of keeping quiet

When I first started talking about my periods, I was asking my friends questions because I actually had no benchmark to work from to know if mine were indeed ‘up the spout’ or they were alright. Apart from the general bemoaning about being on our periods, or due on I found that other than that I hadn’t talked to my friends much at all and the faces they were pulling at me asking what sanitary protection they used or how often they changed it I could tell that they also weren’t that comfortable with the convo either. Some even said so “jeez Gem what the hell do you want to know all this for anyway?” Since I have taken a more not giving a flying fuck about talking about periods vag steams yoni eggs and what your labia looks like, it has come to my glaring attention that we have absolutely no

Vaginal Steams – What the Actual Fuck?!

Vaginal Steams – What the Actual Fuck?!

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t think this the very first time someone spoke to me about vaginal steaming, I’d never heard of it before and it conjured up lots of images in my head about how that could look! I enjoy getting the same raised eyebrows from family, friends, and clients when I tell them about it also, because I know they are thinking that exact same thought followed by what the hell is Gem on about now and where are the cameras?! So before you, negative nellies get your thumbs geared up to tell me how much utter nonsense this all is, have a read and then make your own mind with the full info because if you have never tried it you are in for a bit of a treat. Now because I suggest this, people can assume that I’m some kind of crackpot

Angry Birds

Angry Birds

I’ve been following the story about Serena Williams’s ‘rage’ in the final of the US Open  with interest, I have no idea about the ins and outs of tennis but what I do know is that fellas can be cursing, swearing and throwing their rackets about the place and considered “outspoken” or “challenging” if a woman does it then she is seen as “emotional”, “irrational” or “hysterical”. I’m sick to death of women being billed as emotional or sensitive, and I tell you what it really touches a nerve when it’s suggested it could be to do with our cycle. Yes, we do get ahem less patient but only because our body is trying in vain to communicate with us! If you want to go around tearing heads off every month I suggest you have a look at what you are suppressing for the rest of the month, it will be for

The Well Woman Project

The Well Woman Project

Hi I’m Gem, I own The Well Woman Project, I’m writing this blog to hopefully shed some light on a plight that the whole population 50% actually have the physical condition and 50% have to watch a loved one go though it. What am I talking about? Endometriosis a real bitch of a chronic health condition that effects 1 in 4 women – that’s about 200 million women world wide THAT WE KNOW OF. I highlight that because it takes on average 8 years to get a diagnosis because we have some warped idea that periods are meant to be hell on earth every month. So the number of women with this condition is bound to be much higher. Women who have it have more oestrogen than their body can cope with, this comes from our food, our environment, our household and personal products and stress/lifestyle factors. Sanitary products being

St John’s Wort

St John’s Wort

St John’s wort (Hypericum perforated) isn’t usually associated with menstrual health, but it does give us a few amazing properties. It’s coming to the end of it’s flowering now but this morning I happened upon a massive amount of it which filled me with great joy. Its really careful to not get it confused with Rag wort (Jacobaea vulgaris) which is poisonous but also abundant around this time and they usually grow close by to each other. It’s funny how a plant can allude you for some time and then all of a sudden you see it every where! I have been looking out for it for ages and almost given up and then there is was all over the place. It likes scrubby dry areas best to grow, as with all plants if you do collect always be respectful and don’t strip the plant completely. Also ask permission and say thank

What have you got to gain?

What have you got to gain?

I have been guilty of this myself, seeing the negatives in something – actually the negative I was seeing was that women with menstrual problems are tough cookies to crack. Especially if they have Endo or PCOS or any other numerous condition associated with our periods and cycle. I’ll be brutally honest and say that I find the groups I belonged to really bloody awful, I had to put my suit of armour on to pop, and I would find myself yelling at my phone as I read another sorry tale of despair and heartache over some poor women being given ridiculous advice or not being believed about her condition. Go and have a baby, it’s all part of being a woman, periods are meant to be this way (my particular favourite on the old bollocks rating. So I stopped going in then, feeling a complete sense of failure at

Pink Period Pain Killers

Pink Period Pain Killers

Pink Period Pain Killers There is so much wrong with this I’m not quite sure where to begin. I like pink but must everything created with women in mind have to be pink? I mean really did anyone in the marketing team even think about it for a nano second? It pisses me off; all it does is make us pay 10 times the price because it’s fucking pink. Australia has banned pharmaceutical companies for targeting specific pains with their painkillers, I can see why. A packet of Neurofen period capsules will set you back £3.79 for 14 and a home brand will cost you 35p for 16. Which means one of the pills from Neurofen will cost just 8p less then the whole box of home brand and its EXACTLY the same drug in it! So they are a complete rip off. Dysmenorrhea which is the medical term for

Are your periods costing you your LIFE?

Are your periods costing you your LIFE?

“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.” ― Lao Tzu What is being in chronic pain during your cycle like for you day in day out? Pretty exhausting I would imagine, I bet that it kinda rules your life. I suspect it’s dictating to you when you can go out, eat, sleep, exercise, work, holiday, look after your family, have sex and having a social life can be really hard. It completely governs your thoughts, and your life. “Will I be ok today?” “What if I get my period while I’m away?” “I’m a terrible friend/lover/partner because I have had to bail on something AGAIN. Life is so shit because I am always in so much pain and that makes me really frustrated and depressed, it’s so unfair why do I have to be like this?”

Periods aren’t meant to hurt!

Periods aren’t meant to hurt!

Period myth no.284. An absolute corker this one. I’m generally met with raised eyebrows and a yeah right when I say this. I believe it’s one of the biggest problems we have in understanding about our cycles, because everyone believes this. So when you pitch up to ask for help you generally get told that it is very normal to have pain. It isn’t. How you explain pain is very difficult too, because it’s totally believed periods are meant to be awful, when we explain how awful it is we are told it is very normal. It might be met with looks of disbelief that really we should just crack on with it because everyone woman suffers each month, everyone knows that. So the cycle of pain and being told it’s normal starts. We think we are going mad, surely not everyone has this much pain during their period?! Our

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself what it is that you need right now? I’m not talking about more sleep, a wee or hot bubble bath I’m talking about actual symptoms that are present in your body at this given moment. Have you checked in with those recently?
